Here is our latest unschooling adventure. Kiwanja's passions right now are art, dancing, and food preparation. Cooking! Since we got our TV last week, she has been fascinated by the on-demand cooking shows, especially one called Healthy Appetite put on by nutritionist Ellie Krieger.
We've watched the same episode together at least 10 times, and she became so interested that she asked if we could make the same foods as on the show. So we wrote down all the ingredients and went on an outing to the supermarket. While we were there, Kiwanja was explaining everything to me, how the recipe would work, what the ingredients were like (soft, velvety leaves of sage - feel this, Mom!), in a cooking show tone of voice. We had fun.
When we got home, she got straight to work making a garlic herb paste and rubbing it into a pork tenderloin (the first time I've ever bought a piece of meat in my life!) It's resting in the fridge overnight and today she'll put it in the oven herself along with some honey-roasted sweet potatoes. Accompanying the meal will be a parsley-shallot sauce and a watercress salad. And to finish it off she'll prepare a peach french toast bake for tomorrow.
Kiwanja has the same sustained intense interest as her dad - they will get so absorbed and forget to eat or drink until they're done, which is usually hours later. But it feels like such an amazing gift to just let her explore without interruption. She thrives SO much and we actually had a wonderful day yesterday, sans screaming fits! With Danny home now, we are starting to be a family again, instead of a collection of individuals struggling to survive. What a wonderful time.
Bon appetit!
