Holiday Hope Shoe Drive!

Kiwanja, 4, noticed some time ago as we learned about Africa that very often African kids do not have shoes to wear. So we all decided to start a shoe drive and collect shoes to send over to them!

Amani Children's Home (www.amanikids.org) will be the recipient of shoes for kids aged 7-16, and Roots and Shoots has agreed to place shoes for younger kids with a local orphanage in Moshi, Tanzania.

My parents are going over to Moshi next year, so we're bringing the shoes up to them and they'll be taking them over to Africa. So far we've collected 71 pairs of shoes!!!! This includes a sub-drive at a local Sony office, where Kiwanja and I went to pick up 3 boxes of shoes. A few more to collect, then the challenge will be fitting them all into our suitcases! Kiwanja is making a bar graph of how many boys and girls shoes we have, and it's almost evenly split right now.

So our first big service learning project is a big success so far - we are having a wonderful time and helping kids on the other side of the planet as well.
