- Collected 110 pairs of shoes, 62 girls and 48 boys
- Learned about Africa and gained a perspective that many people in the world have a lot less in terms of material things than we do
- Learned about Amani through Stefanie's video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWIvCBsOyXw, realized that those exact kids will be wearing the shoes we collected
- Explored Google Earth to see where we live, where grandparents live, and where Amani kids live
- Examined shoes of all different kinds and sizes, trying them on!
- Tracked donations with a bar chart, counting and categorizing the shoes into number of pairs for boys and girls, coloring in the chart as we received donations
- Came along for several shoe pickups, including a big one at Sony, where she posed for a picture with our friend there and gave her a high five
- Experienced her first solo photo shoot and gave a quote for the San Mateo County Times article featuring her and the shoe drive
- How to coordinate and mobilize a community effort to give in a focused, concentrated way, as well as how to help sustain interest and momentum throughout the project (my learning)
- How to turn a potentially consumption-based interest into a valuable, positive experience of giving and sharing interests in a global connection
There must be other lessons that we all took away from this as well, and I'm sure Kiwanja would have her own list, but these are my guesses. Hooray!! One project under our belt, and on to the next one! And how wonderful it will be to see the project completed and the photos of my parents' trip to Africa to deliver the shoes. What a fun and important experience this has been.
